Missing Middle Sounds/Kindergarten Phonics Center

Posted on May 3, 2019 by Katie B

Hey all!! This post is focused around kiddos identifying and finding the missing middle sounds in CVC words. I have two versions available in this game…one with pictures and one without pictures. Both come with recording sheets!

Let’s start with the game that includes pictures…

Students identify the picture and add the missing sound to CVC word.

Students look at the cute clip-art in this game and add the middle sound. AS the teacher, you can cut of the squares with letters or the circles. You can also decide to use magnet letters, bottle caps, or laminate and have the students write the letter with a dry-erase marker. So many possibilities.

An example of a page where students find the missing O vowel sound.

Students will use their find motor skills in order to move the rectangle pieces with the words and manipulate the small letters.

This reading center has always been a favorite of my kindergarten students. Yet, would also find a great home in a pre-k or first grade classroom. This game is great for reading centers, guided reading, or morning meetings.

Don’t have a color printer? Don’t worry! I have included black and white slides!

I have also included a recording sheet.

Students will fill in the missing sounds.

Looking for a version of this game without the pictures? You are in luck.

Using vowels, students can create real or nonsense words.
As with the other games, you can use these letters provided or use your imagination!
Students can write the words they created and decide if they are real or nonsense.
This set can be used for both games!

I hope this blog post was helpful in providing multiple visuals for my Missing Middle Sounds centers!

I hope you and your students enjoy these centers! Please tag me on Instagram (applesalone) if you use one of my centers!

Have a great day and remember that teachers can’t survive on apples alone! Take care of yourselves.
